John Valore is back on the sidelines.

The former coach at Cherry Hill East, Valore was approved as the head coach of the Cumberland boys’ basketball team by the high school’s board of education at its June 28 meeting.

Valore was the coach at East for 35 years before being forced to step down after retiring from his teaching position in 2011. He was involved with the program for 43 years overall.

Valore replaces Alex Williams, who took over midway through last season for Jason Ceresini. Williams was the JV coach.

Jack McNally was approved as an assistant coach, while Marcus Bullock was also named an assistant.

Valore retired from Cherry Hill East with a career record of 549-363 – seventh on South Jersey’s all-time list. He went 23-5 in his final season.

During his tenure, Valore’s teams averaged nearly 16 wins a year in the highly competitive Olympic Conference. There were 10 seasons of at least 20 wins, with a high-water mark of 23 wins coming in 1984, ’85, ’86 and 2011.

A member of the Tri-County Conference, Cumberland finished 5-21 overall last season. Valore has been running summer workouts and coaching the Colts entry in the St. Augustine summer league.
